Eiger B.A.S.E. – "It is the dream of flying…"

With their jump from Eiger North Wall in 2000 Hannes Arch and Ueli Gegenschatz had demonstrated the viability of their idea and realised their dream of flying.

2001 they want to repeat it – they will do it without the help of a helicopter and will climb over the west ridge to the jumping point. Doubts again, questions again, which can only be answered by jumping.
But the decision to jump was made long ago. During the last hours, whilst climbing over the west ridge, Hannes Arch and Ueli Gegenschatz  they felt  how with every step up the mountain time was getting more and more intense  and their dream was slowly turning into reality...

The last minutes before the jump are filled with always the same chores: Checking the equipment, putting on the belt and helmet, a last safety checkBut they are far from a routine; they are much more a beloved ritual in which they place their  trust. At some point there is nothing more to do than move to stand on the edge of the clearance.......

It is this dream of flying......
Then they experience what looks like freefall as a flight.
They don’t jump into the chasm – they jump into the air.....
......and they are confident that it will carry them.
